Budingen Architecture Was Founded to Fill an Industry Need
Throughout my years of practicing architecture, I have found there exists no standard for how much a custom set of house plans costs, or for what is included. I have been a part of projects where the set of plans has over 100 sheets for a single house, and cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, while other projects’ plan sets have had less than 5 sheets, and cost only a couple thousand dollars. After spending years in the industry and finding most people only need a basic, good quality set of plans, with immediate and transparent pricing, I decided to found Budingen Architecture LLC.
About Jimmy O’Loughlin – Owner & Architect
The year was 1990. I was sitting in the living room, with my dad asking me questions and filming my answers. I was the seventh of eight sons to endure the list of questions on that Spring day. When asked what I wanted to be when I grew up, I answered without hesitation, “an architect and a builder.” Since I was two years old, I had been around construction, as my family had moved into a “fixer-upper” five years previous. I don’t think I exaggerate when I say there was always a project happening, be it an addition or remodel of some section of the house. During my youth, the entire house transformed, and I was part of it all, and loved it.
The Opportunity of a Lifetime
In 2006, I was given the opportunity to design and build a 1500 square foot addition, as well as redesign the exterior of the home in order to tie everything together. It was a success, not only the final product, but what it did for me and my career. From that point onward, my passion for design and construction was solidified. My passion is not limited to buildings. I love to dive into more of the intricate pieces of a building, such as designing and building furniture, as well as custom staircases. I have found that some of the seemingly small details can have a significant impact on an element or space.
In 2007, I received my bachelor’s degree from the University of Missouri, and master’s degrees in Architecture and Construction Management from Washington University in St. Louis. While in graduate school, I studied for a semester in Helsinki, Finland, learning more about building processes used in other areas of the world. I received my architecture license in 2015, shortly after opening my own business, designing and building homes.
Experience in Construction & Architecture
I am a unique breed of architect, as I have straddled the gap between design and construction for the majority of my career. My experience since graduate school has spanned from three years in a commercial architecture firm, to designing and building homes in my own business for three years, to working for an ultra-luxury home builder, where I have experienced the pinnacle of fine design and construction.
Because of my construction experience, and having built so much of what I personally designed, I am able to approach a new design with a perspective that would otherwise not be possible. There are aspects of the design that might typically be challenging, but that will be a moot point during construction.
I love the work that I do, but even closer to my heart are my faith and family. I have a beautiful wife and six children (five daughters and one son), and on the evenings and weekends, you’ll find me either with them or attending church or volunteering in various capacities for my local church congregation.
